Hp Envy 6052e All In One Wireless Color Inkjet Printer With 6 Months Instant Ink Included With Hp+
The HP Envy Pro 6452 All-in-One ($109.99) is an entry-level all-in-one inkjet printer designed for families and micro-offices. While most All-in-Ones (AIOs) of its kind lose points due to high operating costs, in this case, subscribing to HP’s Instant Ink service makes using this printer a relative bargain. This envy sells for about $30 less than our current low-cost Editors’ Choice, the Brother MFC-J491DW; However, the operating costs of this printer are very high compared to the 6452 in combination with Instant Ink. This little envy’s low price and operating costs make it solid for home offices, family rooms, and dorms. That’s good for 200-300 pages a month – enough to fit into our preferred entry-level AIO slot for homes and home offices.
Like the Envy Pro 6455 All-in-One reviewed in June, the 6452 prints well and has good features for the price, although, as expected for its class, it’s slow. You can find the former at store.hp.com (opens in a new window), and the latter is available at Walmart.
Since 1982, it has tested and rated thousands of products to help you make better purchasing decisions. See how we test. (opens in a new window)
In most respects, the Envy Pro 6452 (which can print, scan, copy and fax) is similar to the 6455. Both measure 6.8 by 17 by 14.2 inches (HWD) and weigh 13.6 pounds, roughly average in size and weight for an entry-level AIO. Both are part of a recent release of the new Envy Pro 6000 series (today’s 6452, June’s 6455, and a less powerful Envy Pro 6055 to be reviewed here shortly).

While there are some minor differences between them, it’s primarily the 35-page automatic document feeders on the 64xx models that make them more flexible and valuable. This is, for the record, a manual two-sided document feeder, not the automatic two-sided type that scans and copies double-sided multi-page documents without user intervention.

You get feedback—for example, when the printer is in different modes such as copying, scanning, or printing—from the status LEDs that illuminate the top of the input and output trays. (Purple, for example, is a setting mode.) But you will mostly rely on your smartphone to control this printer.
Setup involves scanning a barcode with your handheld’s camera. Once that’s done, all functions, including printing and copying, are performed on your phone or tablet, or on a desktop or laptop computer with the HP Smart app installed, which we’ll review shortly.
Another common feature in home and family printers these days is smart home voice activation. Most HP, Canon, and Epson inkjet and AIO printers can be operated using spoken commands. The Envy Pro 6452 supports Amazon Alexa and Google Home Assistant. However, HP’s voice activation support no longer includes simple IFTTT scripts (If This Then That), which would allow you to create voice commands for specific services like Microsoft’s Cortana and Apple’s Siri.

Paper handling consists of a single 80-sheet tray that can alternately hold up to 10 envelopes or 40 sheets of premium photo paper. The printer’s maximum monthly duty cycle is 1,000 pages, with a suggested monthly volume of up to 100 prints.
Of the machines mentioned here so far, the 80-sheet capacity is the smallest, with the Envy 6455 and Brother MFC-J491DW coming next with 100 sheets. The 6455 has the same duty cycle as the 6452, while the Broder achieves 2,500 impressions per month with a recommended volume of 1,000.
Standard connectivity consists of Wi-Fi, USB and Bluetooth 5.0. Regardless of which wireless or wired connection you connect to the hardware, in most cases you communicate with the Envy Pro 6452 using the HP Smart app. It’s a cross-platform app that works similarly on all computing devices – like laptops, tablets and smartphones – but it also supports other useful options like scanning to cloud sites or printing from cloud sites.
But first, there are the standard connectivity interfaces, which include, as mentioned, USB and Wi-Fi, as well as Wi-Fi Direct. The latter is also controlled via a smart app, as is the ability to use your handheld camera to scan documents directly to the AIO or local drive or your favorite cloud site. On some other HP machines, the Smart App also handles optical character recognition (OCR) routines that allow you to scan text documents and convert them to searchable PDF, Microsoft Word, or another format that allows you to edit scanned text directly. But this feature is not available with Envy AIOs.

The HP Smart App printer driver works on Windows, macOS, Android and iOS. However, depending on the HP printer you are using, its functionality goes far beyond simply communicating between computing devices and printers. Smart Tasks Smart App is a collection of customizable workflow presets that automate repetitive tasks such as scanning to your favorite cloud site, scanning to email or local folders on a computer or network server, and remote printing. Envy Pro also supports Apple AirPrint, Mopria and HP ePrint (for printing emails and attachments).
The downside to basic home inkjets is that most of them, including the Envy Pro 6452, are slow. HP rates this machine at 10 ppm monochrome (ppm) and 7 ppm for color pages. Six seconds per page (or just under 10 seconds for a color print) might not sound slow, but trust me, when you’re waiting for a multi-page print job to complete, it is. (See how we test printers.)
To gauge its speed (or lack thereof), I tested the Envy 6452 via USB from our standard Intel Core i5 test with Windows 10 Pro. It printed our 12 page Microsoft Word text document at an average speed of 11.2 ppm, slightly faster than the 10 ppm rating tied with the Envy 6455. It was 2 ppm slower than the Brother MFC-J491DW.
Then I printed some color business documents from Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint containing tables, charts and other business graphics and embedded images. I combined these results with the Word document test to calculate a comprehensive score for printing our full set of test materials. Here, the Envy 6452 managed a pretty slow 3.3 ppm. To be fair, though, the HP and Brother printers aren’t really designed to print the large, complex business documents that make up this part of our tests.

, however, is designed for printing photos. Envy produced our detailed 4-by-6-inch color test shots in an average time of 36 seconds each. This is a typical impression rate for your industry.
Like the Envy Pro 6455 and other family members we’ve reviewed, the Envy Pro 6452 prints beautiful text and decent graphics and photos – about what you’d expect from an entry-level inkjet AIO. The text I printed was very sharp and readable at most point sizes, down to about 6 points. Excel tables and charts, PowerPoint pages, and Acrobat documents also looked good, except the gradations and dark fills weren’t perfect. I saw some streaks, but the overall graphical output was A-OK.
As for photos in general, while HP has done a great job of combining its four-ink machines (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) to produce beautiful photos (they look better if you use the company’s premium photo papers), the competition in the consumer printer market is difficult. Several entry-level photo AIO systems, including the Epson Expression Premium XP-7100 and Canon Pixma TS6320, implement five (sometimes six) inks. These additional colors provide a wider color gamut (gamut) and more detail, producing more vivid, color-accurate images.
That’s not to say the Envy’s photos aren’t better than normal, but they’re not the best in their class. A nice touch, though, is that this AIO prints borderless documents and photos up to 8.5 by 11 inches. Bordered photos or photos with a quarter-inch white border around them rarely look professional.
